Daily Devotionals by Ardith Keef

The hymns that you have been singing are poems set to music.
The hymns should be memorized apart from the music - you will never again have the experience of getting dull when you sing.
At our Sunday night meeting last night we had one of the children (11yrs old) singing a hymn with all his might and his eyes were shut tightly. He knew all the words and he is a handsome, cool kid who has no problem pulling out all the stops.
If you ask him the words to any hymn, he can sing them all. But the ones he shuts his eyes on and sings with his heart are the ones he can say without the music.
This is not the case with "worship songs". When you say only the words to those songs, they loose their content apart from the notes.  The music is the wind that carries the song, but the words are what the heart feeds on.
Want to stoke your fire? Memorize the hymns of the faith.
