Ignorance and sentimentality are a lethal combination.
These are the two characteristics that create spoiled children and political liberalism.
A soldier of the Cross is not allowed to yield to the feelings of feeling sorry for someone because of a human condition or a good sob story. We minister because of grace and not because anyone deserves it.
The enemy can come up with the finest acting and the most clever story. If Christians are not careful, they can be swayed by all the wrong things, and can be easily talked into , for example, holding a grudge against someone they have never even met!
There is a little soft place that we all have, and it is a weakness of the flesh. It wants to please certain people and at the same time control certain circumstances. Believers who have eaten afresh of the Word of God will be vigilant, and may feel the sentiment, but will see through the scam.
The most common evidence that sentimentality has taken over is when someone wants to rescue or help another when it is not appropriate.
We absolutely, positively may not be led by feelings in any area. As you have heard me say many times:

       God's Word is more real,
Than the way that you feel!
