It is too easy to develop a critical spirit.
And the Holy Spirit of God does not coexist with a person's critical spirit. That is only one of the reasons that we are told to assume the best, esteem the other more highly than ourselves, and think on the things that are edifying and heavenly.
A spirit of discontent is usually found in connection with a critical spirit, and the one who struggles with this problem rarely know it. He always thinks the problem is with the other person, and by the way, he should be somewhere else doing something else with someone else!
These attitude problems cannot be hidden, and they dribble out of the mouth like slow moving puss leaks from an infected soar. There can be no real worship, no unhindered prayer, no enjoyment of the Word, and most definitely, no love.
A person with a critical spirit is putty in the hands of satan, and can not resist telling others what they should do. They are energized by criticizing Christians behind their backs, and when they confront people, they cripple them in the very areas they think they have such insight.
These same people hold themselves up as standards for all to match, whether they know it or not.
And we must be careful, because every single human being has these tendencies.
We can be free from this pollution only by daily claiming contentedness as we pray, and by confessing what ever the Holy Spirit shows to be unclean - even the tiniest smudge of smugness.
Criticism never filled anyone with the Lord, but love has won each of us!
