We have taken on an interesting word in the last seventy or eighty years - "ego." We have used that word as though it were a valid term. The term comes from Freud, and he drew up the idea that it is a part of us that must be fed, but according to his diagnosis.
The Bible never mentions ego - things are more simple than that. The instruction of the Lord is that we are to look ahead and we must not seek the approval of men.

     I don't have an ego.
I have an old nature that kicks and screams for attention, but is positionally dead and that means I have a choice. When I choose to obey the Lord, at that moment there will be power to respond to Him and Him alone.
