Christian character is built as the Soldier of the Cross goes through difficult things and submits to the Lord.
One with character does not feel it and is not what modern writers call "self-aware". Hallelujah!
That is because when one decides to pursue God, God in turn scoops that one up and presents to him the rich treasure of hardship, along with healing, sight, love, restoration, and infinite blessing.
And in the nucleus of the hardship, the Soldier can find an opening that leads to rest and escape from the perils that result from worry and resentment. But that opening can only be found by obedience.
The One who has already provided that way of escape had set all things up to bend to His command and plan. That means that my tiny little brain does not have the capacity to worry itself into insight. I simply can't plot until I come up with the unheard of, and all things heard of won't work.
The fact is, I am now a Soldier of the Cross. I said I would follow Jesus, and that means following, not checking things out with binoculars and then deciding if I like the odds or the projected result.
There is a deep, cleansing integrity that is built by the Holy Spirit as the believer walks in obedience. Each time the decision is made to step off the cliff into the Everlasting Arms, the Soldier of the Cross has a deeper reliance on the pleasure He takes in obedience.
After a time, that Soldier takes pleasure in obedience because his Lord and Savior delights in it. The result becomes less important than obedience itself, and the Soldier is able to clearly see Jesus.
That is the building of Christian character!
