As a preacher's wife,
I have frequent occsion to visit those who are dying. I would
like to think that if I were a single widow I would still seek
these folks out, but right now, the situation arises almost weekly.
Usually the people I see are in a nursing home, but not always.
The Bible has a good deal to say
about death, but it is still an unknown to all who have not yet
passed through from this life to the next.
For the believer the Bible says
that it is the same life. When I asked the Lord to be the Lord
of my life, I received eternal life, and when I cross over, the
environment will not be foreign.
It is good to know that dying is
not something I must figure out how to do. As long as I am breathing,
the Bible teaches me how to live. It is possible to have eternal
and extensive impact through prayer, attitude, obedience and
"rightly dividing the Word of Truth" right up until
the last second.
My father's death was a beautiful
experience, and even his tremendous struggle with cancer was
executed in such obedience that it removed the dread of the disease
for me. I watched him pour himself into attending to those around
him, and constant enjoyment of God's Word flowed out his mouth
constantly.
The manner of death doesn't
matter, it just matters that we let Him have all the minutes
of this life.
