When I teach Sunday School
I am rigid about the songs I want the children to learn. I can't
stand fluff songs that are cute but teach nothing, and I want
all the words to be of eternal impact. If that is not muppetty,
so be it. One of the things I watch for in Christian songs are words that imply that I am "happy, happy, happy, all the day long" and the reason is that it is a big fat lie. There are seasons in the life of a believer when there is wrenching agony, and every breath is a reminder that independence is an illusion. Often, the most unfair and even malicious barbs that Satan sends get sent through other Christians. That is tough to swallow. God never said He would make it squishy or easy or sunshiny all the time - He said " I will never leave you or forsake you." He said "My peace I give unto you." He said " I go to prepare a place for you. If it were not so, I would have told you." Christians are under the gun all the time. And although there is supernatural protection, testing is the only thing that solidifies and sets the vector of Christian character. It is tough, and the battle will not be over until we die, or are caught up in the air to meet Him. But in the meantime, I can testify that there is joy in the night. There is hope in the darkest hour, and we do know Who holds the future. You will never meet anyone who will tell you that he regrets giving his life to Christ. |
