There are some
things that we must pursue in prayer, and others we must learn
to let go. E. M. Bounds writes glorious books on prayer. He particularly emphasizes the importance of praying through certain things, and not giving up. While we do need to be far more vigorous in pressing through until the answer is seen, there are other situations that need to be taken to the Lord and left there. It is not possible to make a comprehensive list of those situations, but usually they are areas in which we feel so insecure, that our desperation has blocked out the fact that God will hear and will act. The Bible teaches that we have a merciful God, whose understanding is beyond anything we can understand. But still, there are times when the believer "prays" as though he were clutching a rosary and trying to move God with his will. I love to stand when I pray, because it reminds me that I am in the presence of the One who is not only able, but eager to listen and answer. He thrills to the requests of His own. And when I stand, I am more conscious that my time before him is an event, and I must get business done. Quite often, Christians who do not pray much will beg constantly about something simply because they want it so badly, and they don't actually believe that God is active for our good. Without realizing it, they think He must be pushed and pushed, and then He might, sort-of listen. The one who prays regularly learns that there are times when the Holy Spirit quietly restrains the believer from praying again for the same thing. This will be accompanied by a supernatural reassurance that even though it cannot be seen yet, the thing is done. When that does not happen, we continue in prayer until we see or know the answer. We can learn much in prayer - the Lord will speak to us in these ways, and we must be available! |
