Do you need
to hear the Lord's voice on a particular issue? You will only hear Him if you are in the habit of listening. If that habit has not been a part of your life, this would be a great time to start. As a pastor's wife and a teacher, I have found that most folks desperately want me to know something. There is an urgency that overtakes many who speak to me, and even if I were carrying fifty overweight elephants, they would expect me to stop and calmly listen to the things that need to be said. Some of the time I do, and when I don't, it is extremely disconcerting to the needy party. Often my university students have stories that I can see are false, and they go on and on with details, trying to convince me that the fourth removed uncle's infected nose hair ought to be enough reason to have missed an exam, or to have an extension on a deadline. In a way, we are like that with the Lord. Here we have One whose heart is ravished when we think of Him, and a great deal of the time, we are justifying our own misspent time and wild emotions. We have many requests, but they are often tendrils of our anxieties, rather than agreements with heaven's agenda. And yet, He sees us a perfect. Why? Because of the Blood! So, we must approach Him differently than we are used to. Although there always should be a time of confession in prayer, we must learn to listen for Him. He speaks in our words as we pray, He speaks through the scriptures we quote to Him as we pray, and He speaks through the hymns we sing in our private times. He has much to say to you. He is interested in the immediate difficulty, and He will address it. But He is also interested in intimacy. Intimacy with the Living God is the result of listening, and obeying! |
