It is good to remember that
the Holy Spirit is "the Comforter". We think of Him in many capacities, but although we talk about and sing about the "Comforter", we rarely allow Him to comfort. How does this marvel take place? We are ministered to through the Word of God, through direct reminder, and by the love of the Saints. All these are the sweet, comforting ministry of God, the Holy Spirit. Often when Christians are hurting there is an attempt to cover up or deny that there is any need at all. And what is worse, when a brother is clearly hurting badly, most rush in with advice instead of comfort. So there has been a quenching of the Spirit from all sides, and no divine operation has been allowed at all. We are needy. We are not intended to be self-sufficient. We need all that God is and has, and it is critical to learn to minister life when the temptation is to render a performance of the "correct" Christian. Those who need comfort are not weak - they are in the flow of God's sovereignty. If someone wants attention all the time, he does not need comfort, but he probably needs discipline. How do we receive or minister through the Holy Spirit? We must simply be available. He will do the rest. |
