When I came to the
Lord, it was because He wooed me. It was most definitely not
because the Christians around me said all the right things -
which they did. By the "right things," I mean the pat little sayings and answers that are only beautiful and helpful when spoken by the Holy Spirit. When the Bible talks about soul-winning, the Lord is not speaking of persuasion into correctness. There is a lost soul needing to be found, and saved by the heavenly winning. I remember asking a believer to help me understand the contradiction I saw between the Bible and psychology, which I loved intensely. The man's eyes glazed over and he began reciting all the correct things that I had already heard from birth. Not only was I immediately frozen to anything he could say, but I hoped for any kind of rescue from the thing I had gotten myself into. When I finally came to Christ, it was because there was a wise man with a quiet spirit who knew to wait on God, and he also knew that a pat answer was poison. He waited for the Lord. And I was easily won, because only the Lord knew how to win my soul. I do not believe in soul-winning courses or programs. Of course we must give an answer for the Hope that is in us. But the Holy Spirit needs to richly indwell the believer and make him into a servant who can be trusted in order to allow God to win the soul, speaking through his servant's mouth and loving through his eyes.. |
