No fire today? Go to the store (or the
Jesus room on the web) and buy what I call a "Dead Guy" book.
We very much need to be spoken to by those who
have gone on before. I remember Elisabeth Elliot telling of a terribly
difficult jungle trip - a three-day trek through mud that often made the
traveler sink up to the knees.
She said that it was so wearing that after only
a little while she wanted to give up in despair and lay down in the mud.
But what kept her going was the half filled-in holes in the mud that stretched
out before her party.
Someone had gone quite a bit ahead of them, and
the holes were proof that they had made it. It could be done.
God is not concerned with making us comfortable,
He is devoted to us enough to stretch us. Read and listen to those who
have come to love and seek this divine stretching.
