Daily Devotionals by Ardith Keef

It just feels like we want what we want. And if we investigate no farther, our wants will dominate our lives.
Believe it or not, we choose what we do with our time, our money, and most of us have thoughts that passively follow our desires through the minutes and hours.
But for the believer, the things we want are the things we choose to want. We glean from the Word of God the things that are eternal and then we decide to spend our lives and our faculties in pursuit of them. God's priorities should choose what we want.
The worst thing for a child on a birthday and at Christmas is to give a list of things desired, and then to receive them. It teaches a false economy, and it teaches the child that when he wants material things, the wants will be granted because they are considered to be his priorities. How much better for the child to learn to receive graciously and enjoy the things that are genuine gifts from others.
From the beginning, we need to teach our children to desire the things that are eternal, and to hold them so dear that the life-plans will run firmly on those tracks set in childhood.
Do you think that the best thing for your children is Disney World this year? I am not so sure. While a trip like that may not be harmful, you'd better be sure that the child learns to look forward to serving others more - to visiting the sick more - to not be dazzled by dazzling things.
This is not strict, it is not narrow, and it is not prudish. It is practical, and produces a free spirit and sight.
Lets care enough about our children today to teach them to recognize the lust of the eyes and recognize wanting to be esteemed in the sight of others. Lets teach them that leisure is not better than work. Let's teach them that a man must desire the things that will never pass away!
