We must make sure that we can be
faithful in little before we ask to be given much. One of the precious teachings of God's Word is that the ground must be conquered, claimed, and put to use. This is a supernatural process, but we are often eager to shove multiple flags into as many plots as we can. I will never forget a young pastor telling me that he had just had his first meeting in a new church the previous Sunday. It was a new congregation, a newly formed church, he was the new pastor, and there were over five hundred in the first meeting. He thought I would be impressed, but it was hard to keep the horror from showing on my face. To me it was a striking example of not understanding the work of the Lord, and of not taking the land. Fame counts for nothing. Numbers count for nothing. What happens in public can be the fruit of private prayer or it can be a facade to make up for the lack of it. But the work of God in the home, in the church, at the workplace, in the school, or on the mission field, is the moment by moment stuff. It is the activity and integrity that the angels watch and marvel over or shake their heads at. Oh Lord, I am desperate to learn not to live for the approval of men. It seems I am always seeing things upside down. I plead for heaven's sight and Biblical priorities. |
