Belief can be a pretty dangerous
thing. When a person is genuinely converted, it is because he
has experienced something, and he has been persuaded by
his experience. It is alarming to me that Christians are so prone to argue. I have heard it called witnessing, but it is actually arguing. It is an effort to prove the other person wrong, and prove the arguer right. What good does that do? If a man can be convinced by a good argument, then when the next person comes along with a better argument, the man will bend with that wind. It is not belief that prevents a man from recanting when he is being tortured. It is not belief that causes a man to spend his life for others. It is not belief that motivates consistent intercessory private prayer. These things are fueled by the presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life. I don't have to have a stick of dynamite in my teeth to know something is going on. I have met the Master, and I gave Him my life. Witnessing is just that - telling what we have seen and what we have tasted. A courtroom will not let a witness give an emotional opinion, but the witness is most welcome if he has seen it for himself! |
