Most people
who use the phrase "the power of prayer" do not have
prayer lives. When someone refers to the "power of prayer" most of the time it is a truism and is offered in conversation that concerns prayer, but is not a testimony to it. It is offered in the same sense that the phrase "the good Lord" is usually offered - from a distance, and by those who have never ventured near. Of course, while those who do pray speak of power with God and man, the one who stands often before the living God is not so impressed with prayer's power, but with God's power. The one who prays realizes that he is doing nothing and God is doing everything. The one who prays knows he is being heard. The one who prays becomes more and more acutely aware of the needs of others. The one who prays is focused on the Lord, not on what he is doing. So when a man talks only about the power, he has missed the main point - he who is powerless must come to the One who is Able. If prayer is not brought in powerlessness, it is not brought at all. |
