"Roll
away, roll away, roll away, Every burden of my heart rolled away . . ." Well, probably it did. When you gave your heart to the Lord, He certainly lifted your load, and the minute the sin and guilt rolled off, you were different! And yes, there was and is a joy and a peace that is immovable, and in the center. But many Christians think that all these things add up to lightheartedness, and that is not so. You can be right with the Lord and have a heavy heart on occasion. Grief is a heaviness of heart. Watching a loved one stray from God causes a heaviness of heart. Seeing the lostness of the lost results in a kind of heaviness of heart. But it is not penetrating, and it is always sweetened by the Word and by the vision that the Lord brings of His sovereignty We are not to worry and we are not to wallow in depression. But there are seasons of pain, and we must be careful to honor the one going through them. We may not rush in with well-meant but shallow words that only make the other person feel lonelier. Encouragement comes when the Holy Spirit is allowed to say the thing the person needs to hear. You do not know what that is, and you will not know until you go in faith, without an agenda. Then, you will be allowing the Lord to encourage and uplift you both - two who are pilgrims and sojourners. |
