You can not
gaze upon the living Lord if there is no freshness in the Word. Yesterday's manna will not work today, and yesterday's manna eater will have worms crawling out of his mouth. E. M. Bounds wrote that in his experience, even most pastors and other "Christian workers" did not take time to have a devotional life. It is the great tragedy of the Church, and it is widespread. If we are not careful, we get less willing to expend energy as we get older, and most do nothing to seek after the Lord. It is entirely possible to go to church and participate in just about everything without seeking after the Lord - especially the way things are set up today. If there is no seeking, then the first commandment has been batted away, and our passivity has marked us. What is the theme of your life? Is it knowledge? Activity? Control? Stability? Recreation? Togetherness? Religion? All of these things are rooted in idolatry and we must press after the Lord vigorously or we will fall into them. If the believer is actually seeking the Lord, then and only then can the theme of his life be Love. |
