We are sure
getting fancy these days! Believers are taking Christian cruise vacations, buying into elaborate investments schemes, and generally building defenses against simple faith. Paul did say that many thing were lawful, but not expedient And that is where the Church seems to be today. We are indulging and spending like the rest of the world and whether we admit it or not, we are constantly on a quest for enjoyment. We need to get down to business and learn to enjoy the things the Lord has set out for us to do. Most of the gadgets inside the home today are intended to save time, and the time saved usually goes to either recreation, or to spending time on another time-saving device. We have lost touch with the value of time and how to spend it. We have fallen into some mighty strange living patterns, and it is time to take stock! The bottom line? The living out of our days must be for the purpose of building up the body of Christ and winning the lost. Our free time must be measured against heaven's purposes, and while the body needs respite here and there, we have developed a distorted sense of rest and recreation. I do not find it helpful when people tell me that I must take more time "for myself". What does that mean? Will I be able to stand before the Lord and win his approval when I say I learned to take time for myself? If a Christian is praying for sight and for daily transformation, he will suffocate if he tries to spend his life as most do. Jesus had no problem dining with those around him, and he took time to love. But His life was pointed at the Cross, and everything He did and said was a reflection that His earthly life was to be spent on a heavenly mission. I try to be sensible about sleep and regulating the schedule, but it is most definitely not a goal. That would be sin. The goal must be to let the Lord have my life, and if that means a hundred years of service, fine. I won't squeeze out more years by resting. If it means fifty-two years, fine. I won't squeeze out more by resting! I gave my life to Him, and I don't want it back! |
