It is
quite a thing to agree with God, to give up doing things our
way, and take up doing things His way. It means giving up all human rights, and that is a concept that few will even approach in prayer. Most of us think we have a right to a vacation, to a birthday party, to being treated well, and certainly to be recognized for what we do. Most of all, when we are right, we have the right to be acknowledged as such by the other person. I have seen saints who know how to celebrate an anniversary with a spouse, and equally, know how to serve all day without seeing that one, and without resentment. I have seen saints who enjoy time out because it is pleasureful and they are exhausted, and I have seen the same saints unflinchingly change plans at the last minute in order to fill an empty gap in a line of service. Nehemiah had the human right to keep his spectacular job with the king, and certainly after he began building the wall, he had the right to go home. He has the right to blow away his hecklers. He had the right to have the lying and plotting stop. But Nehemiah was not concerned about His rights - He was concerned about the business of the Lord, and that took far greater priority. Paul certainly was not concerned about His rights humanly. Our lives either circle around our rights, or they circle around the One who asks us to give up what we don't really have rights to, anyway!
