No home should
revolve around a child or children. The home should revolve around the Lord and the order should be to follow His precepts and discipline must be for the same reasons. The Lord does not change His plans to accommodate our fears or tantrums or lack of understanding. He has not designed the universe to rotate around our fleshly needs or demands. But instead, He gave His own Life so that we could be transformed into His likeness. Yes, He attends to us each moment, but it is not in capitulation to our selfishness. But it is to chasten us and train us to come after Him and be about His business. The table should be a place where children learn to consider others first. No misbehaving child should be allowed to stay at the table. Whining and fussy reaching should not get the thing wanted. It doesn't work with the Lord. He is sure to deal swiftly and deeply with the one who at the Lord's Table is misbehaving. And no amount of objecting will change His mind. The last hundred years have brought an onslaught of deadly psychology and "specialists" who have no godly insight into the making of a person. No earthly parent ever sailed through, thinking he or she did everything just right. Even the experts can't offer that illusion. But we have a Lord who can be counted on to hear and to give wisdom. Parents who raise their children on their knees do not fear the children. Neither do they feel like they are always consumed by the needs of the children. That is because they are first about the Father's business, and then about their own business. That allows them to rely on the Lord for sight and they learn to listen for wisdom in the moment. Parents, it is a spectacular privilege to raise children and our children always have a tender entrance into our hearts that no other human will ever have. Knowing that, imagine how eager our Heavenly Father is, to lead and give light on each matter. Like the rest of life, the raising of children is not about our children needing us, is about all of us needing Him! |
