All prayer must
be measured against the Word of God. It is troubling when God's people ask in prayer for things that do not match the instruction of the Bible. For example, we know we can ask for things that may be His will, but when it comes to praying for other people, we lack the insight of the Holy Spirit if we go by sight. I believe it is possible to know absolutely nothing, but to be given the name of a believer we know, go to prayer and be deeply stirred by the Spirit to pray protection or release for that individual. On the other hand, when I come before the Throne of Grace and make specific requests, possibly for discipline or changes in the lives of others, I'd better make sure I am led of the Lord. We need to be careful with wording at those times so that we are not praying amiss. Without divine light I must not pray that a quiet person will talk more or I must not design for the Lord the method of release or punishment for another. It is critical to humbly come to Him, trusting that we see little and He sees all. Then, I can bring a struggling Brother or Sister to Him and present the simplest request, according to His Word. We need more prayer of intercession. We must also understand that as long as He tarries, we need to ask Him to constantly teach us how to pray. He tenderly longs for deeper intimacy and is always eager to respond. . |
