The old hymn
"I Need Thee Every Hour" certainly states our
situation accurately.
There are principalities and powers
that do not sleep. Evil lurks all the time. And,
while we are not to be preoccupied with the enemy, it is foolish
to think we can just operate on our teaching and sail along.
We need to acknowledge ( in prayer
and outloud) that we have been created with a need rather than
with the provision.
He is our Provision.
It is not a matter of seeing more
clearly or having more wisdom - it is a matter of having sight
as opposed to blindness and choosing to be a follower over independently
crashing into things.
This is a basic lesson for the
believer and many have not been able to get past the intense
desire to "do it myself!"
I can't make myself stay on the
planet earth - only gravity does that, and I have no power to
interfere with gravity.
I can eat well and exercise, but
I have no power over life and death - even my own.
When the Soldier of the Cross comes
to the fork in the road where he must choose to lean on the Master
rather than to use his own human instincts, he has sight for
the first time.
He will See Jesus.
He will know where He is, and he
will have no trouble following.
He will easily discern the enemy.
And he will be a clean vessel for
service.
Oh Lord,
please do the deepest work in me. I beg you to create in me a
heart that wants to follow and not lead. I long to stand before
you and recognize that I have been following hard after you all
along.
As painful as it might be, please
do whatever it might take to humble my innermost man enough to
bear your likeness.
